NFL Anthem Policy Shows What Little Regard It Has for Its Black Players

Posted on by

The NFL had nearly two years to find a solution, 21 months to do the right thing, 635 days to recalibrate its moral compass and show its black athletes and black fans that the biggest sport in America gets it.

Commissioner Roger Goodell, without input from the NFL Players Association or reportedly a formal vote from the owners, decided to force players to stand on the field for the national anthem or remain in the locker room. Teams and players are subject to fines if they decide to demonstrate, a gesture that Kaepernick started by sitting during the anthem during the 2016 preseason to protest police brutality and racial inequality.

I just felt it was time to move on from the 24/7-ness of football coverage and try something a little bit different, King told SI’s website. My 29 years at Sports Illustrated have been, collectively, a dream come true.

King, 60, had covered the NFL for Newsday and the Cincinnati Enquirer before joining SI’s staff in 1989 鈥?a much happier time in the media industry, and legacy magazines like SI in particular. Eli Manning, Giants memorabilia fraud lawsuit settled

Posted on by

The memorabilia fraud case against Eli Manning has been settled.

A spokesman for the defendants on Monday said a settlement had been reached to resolve the claims after three sports memorabilia collectors accused the Giants quarterback of providing fake “game-worn” equipment.

While details were not disclosed, the attorneys for both sides issued a joint statement on the matter (per ESPN):

Some of that resiliency came from the stellar offensive play of Alex Ovechkin and Kuznetsov. Some of it came from a timely save or three by Braden Holtby, at least earlier in the playoffs. But much of it came from a supporting cast of players from the AHL and outside the organization — including relative veterans Devante Smith-Pelly (25 years old) and Alex Chiasson (27) — who didn’t understand that, as tradition holds with the Capitals, they were supposed to meekly leave the postseason when their opponents deemed it was time.

They hadn’t taken part in those playoff runs that stumbled in the semifinals. They didn’t know any better. “Some of these young guys, they think this is how it is every year,” said Trotz. “But that’s where you want to get to as an organization.”

It can even work with Clarkson! After Horford sank a jumper early in the second quarter, LeBron rushed up the left sideline, took a screen from Clarkson with about 20 on the shot clock, earned a switch, posted up Rozier, drew help from Horford, and nearly found Nance for another alley-oop:

Brown busted that by abandoning Korver in the corner, but coaxing that crisis rotation is a win for the Cavs. LeBron, Nance, and Thompson were all more attuned to short-range lob possibilities.

Forcing point guards onto LeBron is always good. It draws every eyeball. Remember when Thompson sprung Smith for an open triple with a nasty flare screen? It happened because literally every player on the court — including Smith’s man — stared at James lording over Rozier:

The NFL won’t stray from its regular rotation for the next round of Super Bowl host cities.

The league announced Wednesday it has awarded the 2023 Super Bowl to Arizona and the 2024 game to New Orleans.ravens_012

Jim Irsay: Faith in Andrew Luck’s return led Colts to turn down trade offers

Posted on by

The Colts really, truly, honestly, “100 percent” believe Andrew Luck will play — and play well — this season. Jim Irsay intimated other teams called about trading for Luck, but the owner said the confidence the Colts have in the quarterback’s future kept them from even listening.

“Trust me, there were people that would have given an unprecedented amount of draft picks with a No. 1 behind them for him, and we wouldn’t even think of even drifting in that direction,” Irsay said, via video tweeted by Kevin Bowen of 1070 The Fan. “He’s our guy. We feel 100 percent confident he is going to come back and lead this football team with some of the new teammates he’s accumulated to great things.”

Irsay said the Colts proved their commitment to and faith in Luck by not addressing the quarterback position, instead focusing on building a better offensive line to protect him. The Colts drafted Notre Dame guard Quenton Nelson with the sixth overall choice and took Auburn guard Braden Smith with the 37th overall selection.

“If we had any doubts, we would have at least talked about the quarterback position from a backup standpoint and all those sorts of things,” Irsay said. “But we really don’t have any doubts.

“Again, until he goes out and does it, it’s going to be a matter of great interest and debate. That’s just the way it is. But I’m very confident having followed his rehab extremely close and seeing where he’s at, that he’s going to be good to go, ready to go, this season.”

Two teams are in particularly good shape for next year’s draft: The Packers, who got the Saints’ 2019 first-round pick, and the Patriots, who got the Bears’ 2019 second-round pick and the Lions’ 2019 third-round pick.

The Packers are the only team in the NFL with two first-round picks in 2019, and that’s a great place to be in. Although the Saints are favored to be a playoff team, any time you can get an extra first-round pick, even a late first-round pick, it’s a big deal. And Packers fans can root for the Saints to fall short of expectations, and send a high first-round pick to Green Bay.

The Patriots are the only team with two extra picks in the first two days of the 2019 draft, and both of their extra picks come from teams likely to miss the playoffs. broncos_059_ab0542ed5ce36222-180x180

49ers take Kentavius Street despite torn ACL

Posted on by

When Trent Baalke was the General Manager of the 49ers, the team had a habit of taking players coming off serious injuries with the intent to “redshirt” them for a year before expecting on-field contributions.

Thus, it was a coup when the Chiefs traded Smith to the Washington Redskins for promising young cornerback Kendall Fuller—who had four interceptions and an opposing passer rating of just 55.0 last season, according to Pro Football Focus—as well as a third-round pick, which they used to trade up to add defensive end Breeland Speaks in Round 2.

Mahomes is a strong candidate to become a franchise quarterback, and he has a much higher ceiling as well as a much lower salary than Smith. The Kansas City defense is now in better shape, too.

Anthony was initially drafted by the Saints with the 31st overall pick in the 2015 draft, but was traded to the Dolphins for a 2018 fifth-round pick. That pick wound up as No. 147 overall and property of the Rams, who used it to select linebacker Micah Kiser.

Anthony had 15 tackles in eight games for the Dolphins last season. He’ll try for better results this year in hopes of setting himself up for another contract.

The NFL said Thursday that it will review a 1996 sexual assault allegation against Detroit Lions head coach Matt Patricia.

In a statement, an NFL spokesman told CNN’s Jill Martin: We will review the matter with the club to understand the allegations and what the club has learned.

Robert Snell of the Detroit News wrote an article Wednesday regarding a 1996 sexual assault allegation that Patricia was indicted on. The former New England Patriots defensive coordinator was never tried.

Why Joe Namath thinks it’ll be ‘tough’ for Jets’ Sam Darnold to start in Week 1

Posted on by

When the Jets drafted quarterback Sam Darnold third overall last month, it marked the second-highest draft position for a quarterback in franchise history.

Two solo home runs by designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton had the Yankees up, 2-0, but the Red Sox answered with a pair of RBI singles to tie the game.

Left fielder Andrew Benintendi brought home second baseman and former Yankee Eduardo Nunez to make it 2-1 in the top of the fifth. Nunez reached on a wild pitch on a strike out to start the inning.

Strait was one of four AHL players within the Devils’ organization eligble for unrestricted free agency on July 1. Forwards Michael Latta, Bracken Kearns and Ben Thomson can all become UFAs if they don’t sign new deals by then.

Does Red Sox lineup vs. Yankees include Mookie Betts (shoulder)?

Red Sox right fielder Mookie Betts will be in the lineup on Tuesday, batting leadoff when Boston opens a three-game series with the Yankees, according to manager Alex Cora.

Betts leads the majors with 13 home runs and a.355 batting average.

He left Boston’s 6-1 win against the Texas Rangers on Sunday after being hit with a throw in the shoulder while running the bases. sharks-009

Picking Dante Pettis provides 49ers with new weapon for Jimmy Garoppolo

Posted on by

As the son of a former major league baseball player and current coach, new San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Dante Pettis didn’t get to share his NFL moment with his father Friday night.

That’s because Gary Pettis, who played 11 seasons in the majors, was busy coaching third base for the Houston Astros against the Oakland Athletics as the NFL draft’s second round was playing out.

The Pettis family athletic legacy isn’t limited to Gary and Dante Pettis. Dante’s cousin, Austin, also was a wide receiver and a 2011 third-round pick of the then-St. Louis Rams. Dante’s brother, Kyler, is currently an actor appearing on the soap opera “Days of Our Lives.” Dante said having a professional athlete as a father only helped guide the way to his own journey to the NFL.

“It was awesome growing up,” Dante said. “I’ve been around professional sports my whole life. I already have the lay of the land. Obviously, football is a little bit different than baseball, but for the most part, it’s still a professional sport. They all go about their business pretty much the same way. I’m just excited to actually be here now.”

There were only 34 Russian skaters in the NHL last season, but five of the NHL’s top 20 scorers hail from that country. Fourteen of the Russians in the NHL had at least 30 points last season as well. Teams will continue making gambles on these players in the draft.

The safety net is that once a player is drafted out of the Russian system, the team basically holds his draft rights in perpetuity due to the lack of a formal player agreement between the NHL and KHL. When that player wants to come over, if he ever does, his options are often limited to the team that drafted him, unless a trade can be made.

There are quite a few intriguing prospects who recently completed their KHL seasons and are worth tracking a little more closely. Some are under KHL contract for a few more years, and while it used to be moderately common for a player to buy out the remainder of his contract to bolt to the NHL, it is my understanding that is no longer a viable option in most cases. Therefore, we’re seeing more players stay in Russia longer than they might have in the past.

On his back, Giannis carries Bucks to force decisive Game 7

Posted on by

Giannis Antetokounmpo made Game 7 a reality for the Milwaukee Bucks on Thursday night.

After taking only 10 shots in a Game 5 loss on Tuesday night, Antetokounmpo knew he had to be more aggressive and assertive in finding ways to lift his team’s offense — so that’s exactly when it mattered most late in a 97-86 victory over the Boston Celtics. The 23-year-old superstar finished with 31 points, 14 rebounds and 4 assists, carrying his team down the stretch. The visceral performance helped even up the series at 3-3 and forced a winner-take-all Game 7 in Boston on Saturday night.

As the game came to a close, Bucks fans gave their team a rousing standing ovation, chanting “Bucks in 7!” as the final horn sounded in what could be the final game played at the Bradley Center. If the Bucks want to keep their current home open for a couple of more weeks, they must find a way to win at TD Garden — something they have yet to do in this series. Does Antetokounmpo have another monster night left in what has been a grueling series for both teams? The Bucks certainly believe he does as they walk into the most important game of their season knowing that the best player on the floor wears Milwaukee cream and green.

Detroit and Pittsburgh will make up the game with a straight doubleheader on Wednesday starting at 4:05 p.m.

This is the second time the teams will play a doubleheader this season and the third time they’ve had to reschedule due to weather. Wintry conditions pushed back Opening Day at Comerica Park on March 29 and their game on March 31 was also postponed. Pittsburgh swept a doubleheader from the Tigers on April 1. Detroit also had two games against the New York Yankees wiped out earlier this month.

Pittsburgh will send out Jameson Taillon (2-1, 2.86) in Game 1 against Detroit’s Jordan Zimmermann (1-0, 7.71). Chad Kuhl (2-1, 4.57), who had been scheduled to start on Tuesday and was originally slated to take the hill for the opener of the doubleheader, will face Matthew Boyd (0-1, 1.40) in the nightcap.

The Pirates have dropped six of seven following a hot start, while the Tigers have won five of seven.

Pittsburgh’s offense has cooled off during its current slide and manager Clint Hurdle believes his team’s struggles are part of a somewhat larger trend, one the weather is impacting. There could be more strikeouts than hits across the majors in a month for the first time, and Hurdle pointed to frigid temperatures as an issue.

“This has been the most challenging weather I’ve ever been a part of, and I’m not playing,” said Hurdle, who spent a decade in the majors as a player from 1977 to ’87 before going into coaching. “It’s hard to hit when it’s cold.”

Cubs’ Kris Bryant out of lineup for 3rd straight game since beaning

Posted on by

The Cubs are in a wait-and-see mode in regard to star third baseman Kris Bryant, who was hit in the helmet by a pitch in a game against the Colorado Rockies on Sunday. Bryant missed his third full game Thursday when the Cubs faced the first-place Milwaukee Brewers.

Bryant cleared all concussion testing the day he got hit, but the Cubs say he isn’t quite ready to return.

“I learned how resilient we are,” Phillies manager Gabe Kapler said. “I also learned the Diamondbacks are a good club. There’s a really good lineup over there.

“There’s a very athletic defense on the infield and in the outfield. It’s challenging middle of the lineup. If you don’t have your best stuff, they’re going to punish you and they did today.”

Dyson hit a two-run homer in the first and Chris Owings added an RBI double off Ben Lively (0-2) to give the Diamondbacks a 3-0 lead.

Kelly was suspended April 18 for his role in the brawl.

“It’s disappointing,” Kelly said. “Suspensions are always not fun. Went in there and went through the appeal process. Obviously it didn’t work out too well.”

Both he and Austin threw punches after Austin rushed the mound at Fenway Park when he was hit by a pitch from the right-handed Kelly.

“I always like sticking up for myself,” he said. “It kind of helps me sleep at night going in fighting for what I believe in.”

New York has won six straight, and Austin is batting .350 with three homers and nine RBIs in his past five games, raising his average to .290.

“I obviously don’t want to be suspended at any point in time, but it’s happened, we’ve got to deal with it and move forward,” Austin said after Thursday’s game. “I’m happy they knocked one game down. I’m thankful for that.”

The Yankees managed to win the ALDS, despite the Indians completely shutting down Judge. He struck out in 16 of his 20 at-bats against the Indians last postseason, going just 1-for-20 (.050) overall.

Stanton has never hit a home run against the Indians. They’re one of just four teams Stanton has not homered against (the Orioles, the Royals and the Marlins are the others). Stanton’s career vs. the Indians: 3-for-20 (.150), with no home runs or RBIs, four walks and nine strikeouts.

The most recent meeting between the rivals … well, let’s just say it wasn’t exactly friendly.

Red-hot Castellanos powers Tigers over Pirates 13-10

Posted on by

Nicholas Castellanos is racking up hits at a remarkable rate, and the Detroit Tigers needed them in a slugfest Wednesday night.

Castellanos had four hits and a key home run, and the Tigers used 20 hits to outslug the Pittsburgh Pirates 13-10 in the opener of a doubleheader.

The teams combined for 34 hits, including four from Detroit slugger Miguel Cabrera and three from Jeimer Candelario.

Castellanos was coming off consecutive three-hit games against Kansas City. He’s 10 for 15 with two homers and nine RBI in Detroit’s last three games, and he’s batting .337 for the season.

“He had a good day. Put some really nice swings out there,” Tigers manager Ron Gardenhire said. “Miggy, same thing. A really good day.”

Detroit added an insurance run in the ninth on a throwing error by Cervelli, the catcher, on Niko Goodrum’s tapper in front between the pitcher’s mound and home plate.

Castellanos’ two-run shot off Kyle Crick capped a five-run fourth inning and gave the Tigers an 8-6 lead. McCann led off with his homer and Cabrera hit a two-run double in the frame.

Cervelli’s single got the Pirates within 8-7 in the fifth.

However, Candelario countered with a leadoff home run in the sixth and the Tigers scored three times in the eighth to make it 12-7.

“It wasn’t one of those easy games,” Gardenhire said. “We had to finagle our way through it. Kept swinging the bats and so did they. Both teams got after it pretty good. Fortunately for us, we finally shut them down at the end. But the ball was flying all over the place, I know that.”

The play was not reviewed, and James went on to hit a buzzer-beating 3 that gave the Cleveland Cavaliers a 98-95 victory and a 3-2 series lead.

After the game, Oladipo said goaltending should have been called. That would have given Indiana a two-point lead with seconds remaining.

“I got a step on him. Felt like I even got grabbed on the way to the rim,” Oladipo said. “I tried to shoot a layup, it hit the backboard, then he blocked it. … It was a goaltend. It’s hard to even speak on it. It just sucks, honestly. It really sucks. We fought our way back, we tied the game up, that layup is huge.”

Joe Borgia, the NBA’s senior vice president of replay and referee operations, told NBA TV on Wednesday night that the play was not reviewable because goaltending was not called on the court.

“In super-slow motion, you just see the ball hit the glass and maybe come off an inch, and that’s when LeBron got it,” Borgia said. “Like I said, once the ball touches the [backboard], defenders cannot touch it, and unfortunately James did.”

Thon Maker attributes recent surge to Kevin Garnett motivational video

Posted on by

Milwaukee Bucks big man Thon Maker is in the midst of a playoff renaissance, something he has attributed in part to an Instagram video by Kevin Garnett.

“The biggest thing is having that attack mindset on both ends of the floor,” Maker said. “With him, he doesn’t care who you are in front of him if you’re playing against him. On the defensive end, [defending] your shot and protecting your teammates. The biggest thing when it comes to your teammates, him dealing with his teammates, was always touching a guy, telling him, ‘Stay up’ — keeping the guys positive.

“And then on the offensive end, just getting everybody involved, but also looking to attack because his man would be back. That’s what he was telling me: ‘If your man is back, shoot it. And tell them, How dare you back off?'”

Maker’s energy has sparked the Bucks in recent days and has been huge after John Henson had to sit out the past two games because of back soreness.

Carl Edwards Jr. worked the eighth and Brandon Morrow finished the six-hitter for his fifth save in five chances. With two outs and Ryan Braun on first, Travis Shaw flied out to the warning track in left.

“Just a really tightly, well-played baseball game,” Cubs manager Joe Maddon said.

The Cubs had seven hits while playing without slugger Kris Bryant, who missed his third straight game after he was beaned during a victory at Colorado last weekend. Catcher Willson Contreras rested for most of the night before entering as a defensive replacement for the eighth.

Milwaukee got a two-out double in each of the first two innings but was unable to capitalize. Shaw flied out with Braun on second in the first, and Jett Bandy took a called third strike after Orlando Arcia’s hit in the second.

Anderson allowed five hits and walked one in seven innings. He had won each of his prior two starts.

“He threw a great game and I just tried to match that,” Anderson said. “And, you know, one pitch to Schwarber, I feel like if it’s up two, three inches he either pops it up or doesn’t hit it. I kind of put it where he likes it. Just one mistake.”jets_098
